Frequently Asked Questions

We have brought together the questions families and students often ask when beginning their arts education. If you cannot find the answer you need, our team will be happy to help.

At what age can my child begin, and which subjects are available?

Melisa Karan Arts Center offers arts programmes suited to each child’s age and developmental stage. Music and arts education can begin during the preschool years. We guide students towards an appropriate programme in piano, violin, guitar, drums, flute, visual arts and other subjects by considering their age and development. If you are unsure which subject would suit your child, we will guide you during the initial assessment.

Is it a problem if my child has never studied music or visual arts before?

No. Our education programmes are designed to begin at foundation level. Students with no previous experience can start their lessons comfortably.

Which instrument would be most suitable for my child?

This depends entirely on the student’s age, interests, physical development and goals. Following the initial assessment, we guide you towards the most suitable subject for the student.

Are lessons individual or held in groups?

We offer both individual and group lessons, depending on the subject. Together, we decide which learning model is most suitable based on the student’s age and goals.

How many days a week should a student attend lessons?

For recreational programmes, we recommend attending regularly at least once a week. Consistency in arts education is important for students to reinforce what they learn and make healthy progress. For conservatoire preparation, examination preparation or advanced study, the number of weekly lessons can be increased and additional practice programmes can be created according to the student’s goals.

How soon will a student who practises regularly begin to improve?

This varies according to the student’s age, practice routine and goals. Students who attend lessons regularly and maintain their practice at home show noticeable progress in a short period of time.

Can a student begin lessons without having an instrument at home?

An initial assessment can be completed first. For consistent progress, however, we recommend that the student has a suitable instrument for practice at home. When needed, we also help families choose the right instrument.

What sets Melisa Karan Arts Center apart from other arts centres, and why should I choose MKSM?

Melisa Karan Arts Center has operated since 2013 as a private education institution approved by the Turkish Ministry of National Education (MEB). Students in eligible programmes can benefit from MEB-approved certificates that can be viewed through the e-Devlet public services portal.

With experienced instructors who have strong academic backgrounds, international certificate and examination programmes, individual student monitoring, and concert, exhibition and stage opportunities, we aim to offer more than a course: we provide long-term, structured arts education.

As the first and only arts education institution in Türkiye with a branch in the United States of America, we also carry the educational experience we have gained in Türkiye into the international arena. We shape our approach around each student’s age, level, goals and individual development.

Do all students have to earn a certificate?

No. Participation in certificate programmes is not compulsory. Students can continue purely for enjoyment or, if they wish, prepare for national or international certificate and examination programmes. Each learning pathway is determined according to the student’s goals.

Can I study purely as a hobby?

Of course. A significant number of our students study entirely for personal enjoyment. Our programmes are shaped around each student’s goals.

Do you offer preparation for conservatoires, fine arts high schools or university fine arts faculties?

Yes. We offer individual preparation programmes for the relevant entrance examinations. Lessons are planned according to the examination system of the student’s target school and their current level.

Do students take part in concerts or exhibitions?

Yes. Throughout the year, our students gain stage and presentation experience by taking part in concerts, art exhibitions, competitions and a variety of arts events.

Can adults take lessons too?

Yes. We believe there is no age limit to arts education. We offer dedicated programmes for adult students from foundation to advanced level. Adults with no previous arts education can also begin according to their interests and goals.

How are my child’s instructors selected, and what qualifications do they have?

When selecting instructors, we value not only their ability in an instrument or artistic discipline, but also their teaching skills and the way they communicate with students. Our teaching team consists of educators who have academic training in their fields, a strong pedagogical approach and experience working with students of different ages and levels.

We believe that the right teacher-student match is especially important for the continuity and effectiveness of children’s education. We therefore match students with a suitable instructor by considering their age, level and learning goals.

Do you also teach solfège and music theory?

Yes. We believe that learning an instrument involves more than simply playing it. To develop our students’ music-reading, rhythm, theory and aural skills, we support solfège and music theory studies as part of the learning process.

Solfège and music theory lessons are offered to our students free of charge.

What is the London College of Music (LCM) certificate programme?

London College of Music is a long-established education institution that conducts internationally recognised music examinations. Students who wish to participate can prepare for these examinations and earn international certificates and diplomas.

How does the introductory lesson work?

Our introductory lesson is delivered in a normal lesson format and lasts for the full lesson duration so that we can assess the student’s level and needs accurately. For this reason, the introductory lesson is paid.

Alternatively, we can arrange a brief 10–15 minute initial assessment free of charge. During this assessment, we can meet the student, answer your questions and provide information about a suitable education programme.

How does enrolment work?

After an initial meeting or assessment, we create a suitable lesson schedule for the student, complete the enrolment process and begin their education.

Are education programmes planned individually?

Yes. Every student has a different age, level, learning pace, set of interests and education goals. We therefore shape each learning plan around the student’s individual needs and objectives.

How are lesson days and times decided? Can they be changed later?

When creating a timetable, we consider the student’s age, subject, level, suitable instructor and the family’s schedule together to determine the best available day and time. To preserve consistent learning and teacher-student continuity, we recommend following a regular weekly schedule wherever possible. Requests to change the timetable are assessed according to current availability and the instructor’s schedule.
